Viking Gate Operators: Repair, Boards & Diagnostics

Viking Access Systems is a FAAC International company. Their operators are common on South Florida driveways and commercial entries, and most of the DC line runs the same control board, which means a Viking that stops working can usually tell you what is wrong before anyone takes a cover off.

We repair Viking operators, replace V-Flex boards, and diagnose the faults that read as a dead gate but are not.

Gate Core Automation is an independent service company. We are not affiliated with, authorized by, or endorsed by Viking Access Systems or FAAC International.

Smart Positioning System (SPS): the K2SPS, L3SPS and H10SPS read absolute gate position at any instant regardless of electrical power, through sensors and a gearbox mechanism on the main drive. No re-learn cycle after an outage.

The K2 and L3 run the standard V-Flex board. The H10 takes its own version with an -H10 suffix. They are not interchangeable.

Every Viking operator on this page is rated to run from -20F up to 160F, except the I770, which is rated to 131F.

Viking's published manufacturer warranty runs from the invoice date: 5 years on its pad-mount operators and 3 years on its other gate operators. Viking warrants its operators to the dealer that sold them, so warranty claims go through the selling dealer. Lightning and power surge damage are excluded.

Specifications and manufacturer warranty terms on this page are taken from Viking's published information as of September 2026 and may change without notice. Confirm current specifications and warranty terms with the manufacturer or your dealer. Gate Core Automation is not responsible for errors in, or changes to, manufacturer information.

The V-Flex Board

The V-Flex is the central controller for most Viking DC operators. It has an on-board LCD display and a Diagnose button that scrolls through fault messages, which is the reason a Viking usually tells you what failed before anything gets opened.

The logo colour dates the board:

  • VFLEXPCB, black logo: 2013 to 2016
  • VFLEXPCBU16, green logo: 2016 to 2018
  • VFLEXPCBU18, orange logo: 2018 to present

All three fit the same operators. The current orange generation improves on the legacy boards in safety logic, LCD messaging and UL 325 compliance.

Coverage: R6, F1, K2, L3, G5, T21, X390 and I770 run the standard board. The H10 takes a suffixed version.

Surge protection: the V-Flex is rated to 20,000 volts and 10,000 amps. Because that sits on the board, any Viking DC operator running a V-Flex has it. It covers the power input. Buried low-voltage lines feeding loops, photo eyes and keypads are a separate path in, and that layer is the one that usually gets skipped.

Dual gate needs a slave: either the Viking Konnect wireless kit for two single operators, or the VFLEXSMU18 slave module with the VECUMSC comm cable and VECUSPH secondary power harness.

Viking Monitor (VA-18) gives remote access to board settings, diagnostics, controls, gate status and error notifications from a computer or handheld device.

Viking Work We Have Done

What a Viking Is Telling You

What we check first. The board light, then the accessories. A Viking that looks dead is usually a Viking that has been told to stop by something plugged into it, so the accessories get diagnosed before anything gets blamed on the motor or the board.

The gate is completely dead, but the board has power.

At least one monitored 10K resistor-based safety sensor has to be connected or a Viking will not run. Put a non-compatible sensor on it and the operator refuses to move. It reads exactly like a failed motor or a dead board, and it is neither. Tested compatible Miller Edge models: ME110-T2, ME120-T2, MGR20-T2, MGS20-T2.

Something is wrong but nobody knows what.

Press the Diagnose button on the V-Flex and the LCD scrolls the fault messages. Most Viking calls start here, and a lot of them end here too.

One leaf moves, the other does not.

A dual-gate setup needs a slave, either the Konnect wireless kit or the VFLEXSMU18 module with its comm cable and secondary power harness. If the slave side lost its link or its harness, one leaf goes quiet.

The gate lost its position after a power outage.

On an SPS model it should not, since those read absolute position without power. On a non-SPS operator, a lost position after an outage is normal behaviour, not a fault.

A safety device is reversing at the wrong moment.

Open direction has to be set correctly. Set wrong, the auto-close timer fires at the wrong point in the cycle and a safety device can end up pointing at the area it was meant to protect.

Repair or Replace

There is no blanket answer on a Viking, and anyone who gives you one without looking is guessing. What actually decides it:

Which board generation you are on. A black-logo board is a decade old. A board swap on a unit that age buys you a different amount of time than the same swap on an orange-logo unit.

Whether the operator is right for the gate it is on. A K2 is rated to 700 lb. If it has been pushing more than that for years, the board is not the problem and replacing it will not last.

Whether the fault is electronic or mechanical. A board fault, a sensor fault or a harness fault is a repair. Worn drive components on an operator that has been overloaded is a different conversation.

Manufacturer warranty status, per model. Pad-mount operators carry 5 years from invoice, the G5, E4, X390 and I770 carry 3, and claims go through the selling dealer. It gets checked per unit rather than assumed.

We tell you which one you are looking at before any work starts.
